6th grade     EARTH SCIENCE

Our dynamic earth is just that: DYNAMIC, ever changing. Even today, new evidence and new understandings are coming to light regarding plate tectonics and weather patterns. From the mid ocean ridges, deep in the sea to the tops of volcanic mountains, our earth is alive and ever moving. Even if we only move a few centimeters a year, it is a process of renewal and rebirth of new lithosphere. Even today, we ponder the why and wherefore of our magnetic poles... what is the evidence, what is the data? 6th grade uses the scientific method of research to determine how we concluded that Pangea is real. We study hot spots, volcanoes, earthquakes, the revolution of the moon around the earth and the earth around the sun. We study Mars and space exploration, especially the quest for water or evidence of past water. Is there Life beyond Earth?

We study rocks, minerals, run the battery of identification tests and hardness tests  take notice of the great many secrets held in rocks. We finally realize that every single household material, our school building material comes from Nature, minerals and chemicals.... redesigned by man for man. Man creates nothing but devises uses for all of God's eartly gifts.....some quite deeply buried or cleverly made. what better tribute to amazing then dazzling diamonds from dangerous dinosaurs and shiny pearls from slimy oysters.

EMPHASIS: HANDS ON: Lab skills, metric system,  making models/ analogy.

BLOOM's Taxonomy: move from memorization, to understanding, and begin to apply knowledge to new information (accomodating new knowledge and new instances ontoold).

SCIENCE IS COOL

7th grade LIFE SCIENCE
Our 7th grade year is all about LIFE and the power of a tiny cell, who acts in unison with other cells (tissue) who forms organs, who in turn,  band together to form organ systems and finally culminates in the Human Body, a super hiway of information, control and intelligence. We begin making a factory and realizing the perfect analogy to a working cell- how could there be so many jobs in a tiny micrometer of life. We see the cycle of photosynthesis and respiration, the impressive human genome, the strength of our immune army and the blood factors that determine every blood transfusion in every hospital operating room and finally are awed by the intracsay of each organ system and their superb tand expert eamwork. We study viruses, diseases, and ill effects of bad nutrition. We dissect owl pellets, chicken wings, a pig kidney, a sheeps eye and a pig's heart. We even perform virtual surgery, a knee replacement. We learn about life, natures wonder and how it fits into God's design.
EMPHASIS: Understanding the Big Picture of Life is really a world of tiny detailed working parts, ie: the cell , the nephron, the neuron, the DNA, the cillia, the villi, the capillaries, etc
BLOOM'S TAXONOMY: CLimbing from memorization, understanding, application and introducing  ANALYZING, why is there disease?

    CHEMISTRY, CHEMICAL INTERACTIONS AND PHYSICS

What is an atom and the understanding of all of its parts. What  is electricity, but the movement of electrons... why do they  move, when do they move? Lightening, batteries, static charge, are all the movement of electrons. How do atoms react with eache other? The world is really a composite of  chemical changes and physical changes  that keep our earth dynamic, that keep our minds inventing new solutions to old problems. Medicines, plastics, superballs, leaves changing colors, plants making food, our bodies walking.. are all a product of chemical interactions.

We also spend the last quarter studying physics, especially the three laws of motion by Isaac Newton which hold true today. Our 4th quarter project is the Rube Goldberg machine and the building of a silly contraption to demonstrate how each machine works.

EMPHASIS: engineering

BLOOM'S TXONOMY: moving through memorizing, understanding, applying, analyzing and  evaluating and CREATING: chemical reactions, toothpaste, super balls, silly putty, roller coaster, race tracks, Rube Goldberg project.
