Peer tutors are expected to show appropriate behaviors during tutoring sessions. In addition, you must effectively manage the behaviors of your Math Pal. Here are some ideas for a positive tutoring session:
1. Be at every session and be on time!
Every minute counts for a student who is struggling. It is important that once you make this commitment that you take it seriously.
2. Welcome your Math Pal each and every time they arrive.
Everyone wants to feel welcome and your Math Pal is no exception. At first, they will be nervous about coming. It is your responsibility to make them feel comfortable.
3. Get to know your Math Pal!
Find out if you have anything in common! Do you like the same sports or the same music? Talk to them a little each time to get to know them. When you see them in the building be sure to say “hello”.
4. Vary your activities
We have a lot of games and activities to choose from. Keep it interesting for your Math Pal by choosing different activities each time.
5. Help your Math Pal behave!
Always be a good role model for your Math Pal. Theyare likely to be well-behaved during tutoring. Sometimes they may need a gentle reminder to return to tutoring activities.
If your student misbehaves:
· Calmly remind them that he or she is there to work on Math.
If your student still misbehaves after several reminders:
· Tell an adult about the misbehavior.
